No Nation Fashion
Under the auspices of the IOM, a project was initiated in the sewing corner of a migrant camp to provide opportunities for the migrants. The project was brought to life by Aleksandra Lovrić, a Sarajevo-based fashion designer, and migrants from two camps, Ušivak Hadžići and Lipa Bihać. The COVID-19 pandemic presented an opportunity to sew face masks from recycled materials, but the project expanded beyond the initial scope. The creative and hardworking migrants from different cultures showed exceptional interest and talent in fashion design.
The IOM team, Laura Lungarotti (head of IOM mission in BiH and subregional coordinator for the Western Balkans), and Aleksandra Lovrić worked together with the migrants to choose the name and visual identity for the project. The collaboration led to the creation of the No Nation Fashion (NNF) brand, which debuted at a fashion show in Sarajevo City Hall in December. The collection showcased the hard work of migrants from all over the world, who brought Aleksandra's designs to life in the sewing corner of the camp. The show was a joyous occasion, featuring migrants and professional models, with an electric atmosphere that left many migrants commenting that it was the most beautiful day of their lives.
The NNF brand sends a powerful message that migrant journeys can bring opportunities for both their current and final destinations. It celebrates diversity and fusion of different cultures and abilities, emphasizing that talent, creativity, expertise, and willpower know no borders. The NNF project received global attention, with hundreds of articles published in regional and international media, including the Washington Post, US News, TRT World, ABC News, and Independent.
